Endovascular Thrombectomy (Clot Removal Procedure)

It is a procedure in which acutely or chronically formed clots (thrombi) within the vessel are removed from inside the vessel using specialized catheters and devices, without the need for a surgical incision.

What Is Endovascular Thrombectomy?

Endovascular thrombectomy is based on reaching the vessel segment occluded by a clot through angiographic methods and aspirating, mechanically fragmenting, or removing the clot. The procedure is minimally invasive and is most often performed under local anesthesia.

What Methods Are Used?

  • Aspiration thrombectomy
  • Mechanical thrombectomy devices
  • Pharmacomechanical thrombectomy
  • Combined interventions with balloon and stent

How Is Endovascular Thrombectomy Performed?

  • The procedure is carried out in the angiography unit
  • Access is usually obtained through the groin or arm artery
  • The vessel containing the clot is reached with thin catheters
  • The clot is removed using aspiration, mechanical thrombectomy, or combined methods
  • When necessary, it is supported with balloon angioplasty or stent placement
  • The procedure duration varies depending on the extent of the clot, but typically ranges between 30–120 minutes

  • Acute arterial occlusions
  • Acute lower limb arterial occlusion
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – in selected cases
  • Pulmonary embolism (in appropriate patients)
  • Dialysis fistula or graft thrombosis
  • Clots developing after stent or balloon procedures
  • Vascular occlusions occurring after trauma or interventional procedures
  • Eliminates the need for open surgery
  • Rapid restoration of blood flow
  • Reduced risk of limb and organ loss
  • Short hospital stay
  • Can be repeated when necessary
  • Patients are usually mobilized in a short time
  • Anticoagulant (blood thinner) therapy is prescribed
  • Vascular follow-up is performed with clinical examination and Doppler ultrasonography
  • Treatment is planned according to the underlying cause of thrombosis

Although endovascular thrombectomy is a safe procedure, the following risks may rarely occur:

  • Bleeding or hematoma at the access site
  • Intravascular injury
  • Recurrent clot formation
  • Very rarely, embolism

These risks are minimized when the procedure is performed by experienced teams.
