Vascular Access for Dialysis Procedures

Placement of Permanent Dialysis Catheter (Permcath)

In patients where an AV fistula or AV graft cannot be created or is not yet ready for use, a permanent dialysis catheter is placed to provide long-term and reliable hemodialysis vascular access. This is an endovascular procedure designed to ensure effective dialysis access for these patients.

Procedure Duration :

30 - 45 min

Provides Effective Dialysis with Proper Placement and Regular Care.

What is Permcath?

Permcath is a tunneled, cuffed, double-lumen permanent dialysis catheter that is placed into a large vein under the skin. Due to its tunneled structure, the risk of infection is lower compared to temporary catheters, and it is suitable for long-term use.

How is Permcath Placement Performed?

Before the procedure, the vascular structure is assessed. The Permcath is placed under local anesthesia, guided by ultrasound and fluoroscopy. The most commonly preferred insertion site is the internal jugular vein. The catheter is tunneled under the skin and positioned in the vena cava. The procedure typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

  • Patients who cannot undergo AV fistula or AV graft creation
  • Cases where the existing fistula/graft cannot be used
  • Long-term bridging needed during the maturation process of an AV fistula
  • Elderly patients or those with widespread vascular disease
  • Patients who are not suitable candidates for peritoneal dialysis
  • Long-term and stable dialysis access
  • Lower infection risk compared to temporary catheters
  • Quick availability for dialysis use
  • Minimal-invasive method that does not require surgery
  • Infection (risk persists with long-term use)
  • Catheter occlusion or flow problems
  • Development of blood clots inside the catheter
  • Catheter displacement

These risks can be significantly reduced with proper technique and regular maintenance.

  • Regular dressing of the catheter insertion site
  • Protection of the catheter between dialysis sessions
  • Early detection of infection signs
  • Regular clinical check-ups

A permanent dialysis catheter (Permcath) is an appropriate option for patients who cannot have a permanent surgical vascular access or when temporary solutions are insufficient. The treatment decision is made based on individual evaluation.
