Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is a treatment method in which an ultrasound device is used to ensure accurate targeting of veins.

Procedure Duration :

15 - 25 min

With ultrasound guidance, veins are clearly visualized, allowing the sclerosant to be injected precisely. This painless and quick procedure increases treatment accuracy and effectively treats varicose veins. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is particularly effective for deeper and larger veins. The treatment is very safe and ensures that veins are properly treated. Mild swelling or bruising may occur after the procedure, but these effects typically resolve quickly.

By supporting sclerotherapy with ultrasound, the accuracy of the treatment process is improved, resulting in safer outcomes. This method is especially effective for recurrent varicose veins. In cases of recurrent varicose veins, after evaluating any underlying venous disease, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy can be safely applied to suitable patients. How Is Post-Procedure Follow-Up Managed?

  • Short walks are recommended immediately after the procedure.
  • Compression stockings should be worn for the duration advised by the physician.
  • Avoid prolonged standing and heavy exercise for the first few days.
  • The first follow-up appointment is usually scheduled 1–2 weeks after the procedure, with Doppler ultrasound used if necessary to reassess the veins.
  • Mild bruising, firmness, or tenderness in the treated area may occur but usually resolves quickly.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if severe pain, excessive swelling, or unexpected complications occur.

Veins treated with sclerotherapy close permanently. However, new varicose veins may develop in other veins over time. Therefore, regular follow-ups and adherence to your physician’s recommendations are important for long-term treatment success.

  • Visible varicose veins or blue–purple colored veins on the legs
  • Leg pain, aching, or heaviness that worsens by the end of the day
  • Swelling (edema) and a feeling of leg heaviness
  • Nighttime cramps or restless legs
  • Burning or itching that increases after prolonged standing
  • Skin color changes, bruising, or hardening
  • In advanced cases, skin ulcers (venous ulcers)

Patients can generally resume daily activities on the same day after ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. Short walks are recommended after the procedure, and compression stockings may need to be worn for the duration advised by the doctor.

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is suitable for patients with medium- to large-sized varicose veins, including veins not visible on the skin but detected by ultrasound. Suitability is determined after a detailed examination and color Doppler ultrasound assessment.
